The Macary family traces its roots back to the Ehden-Zgharta area of present-day Lebanon. Since Arabic uses a different alphabet, immigration services translated names by what was spoken, so there are several different spellings of the same family name. Macary, Mackarey, Mackarey, Macari, Makari, Mekari, Mockary, Mokary are all in fact from the same large family. Still others got the surname omitted due to immigration errors and Lebanese having multiple names including father and grandfather in their official names.
